By President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to reintroduce road tolls later this year, with a strong emphasis on leveraging technology to ensure efficiency, transparency, and accountability.
The disclosure was made during the 2026 State of the Nation Address in Parliament.
President Mahama explained that the new tolling framework will rely on modern electronic systems designed to reduce congestion, minimise human intervention, and ensure proper accounting of all funds collected.
“The reintroduction of road tolls will be done using technology to make the process seamless, efficient, and accountable,” he said.
Boosting Road Infrastructure Funding
The President noted that the initiative is intended to generate sustainable resources for the maintenance and expansion of Ghana’s road infrastructure — a critical pillar for economic growth, transport efficiency, and public safety.
He emphasised that deploying technological solutions would help curb revenue leakages and enhance compliance among road users.
According to him, the government is working closely with relevant agencies to implement a user-friendly system that integrates with existing traffic management and digital payment platforms.
The move forms part of broader efforts to modernise the transport sector. President Mahama assured Ghanaians that the rollout would be carefully managed to avoid unnecessary disruption and would complement ongoing road construction and rehabilitation projects, ultimately improving travel experiences and infrastructure quality nationwide.
