By Getting a Ghana passport is cheaper than it was a year ago. Since Thursday, November 13, 2025, the ordinary 32-page passport costs GH¢350, down from GH¢500, and the fee now includes courier delivery to your door. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa was blunt about it when he announced the change: applicants are not to pay “even one cedi more”. For those who need a passport urgently, there is a one-day service at GH¢2,000.

A word of caution on the other categories. The government’s announcements of the new fees covered the ordinary 32-page booklet and the one-day service. When we checked the online application portal on October 22, 2026, its fee page still showed the figures from before the reform: GH¢500 for a standard 32-page booklet, GH¢644 for a standard 48-page booklet, and GH¢700 and GH¢800 for expedited 32-page and 48-page booklets. The Ministry has said the GH¢350 fee applies at every Passport Application Centre, so if the portal asks you for more than that for an ordinary booklet, query it before you pay. For the 48-page and expedited booklets, confirm the amount on the payment screen.
Why the fee came down
The cut, about 30 percent, was first announced by Mr Ablakwa in Parliament on March 13, 2025, on the instructions of President Mahama, and took effect after Parliament amended the Fees and Charges Act. The Minister said the lower fee was meant to ease the burden on ordinary Ghanaians and to encourage applicants to use the official channels instead of middlemen and unauthorised agents.
It came with a new booklet as well. Since April 2025, Ghana has been issuing chip-embedded passports, and by November 2025 about 215,807 Ghanaians had received one. If you already hold the older biometric passport, it remains valid until the expiry date printed in it.
Documents you need
Ghana Card. The National Identification Authority is clear that the Ghana Card is required for “acquiring a Ghanaian passport in/or outside Ghana”. If you do not have one, sort that out first; Ghanaians abroad can register through the NIA’s diaspora registration.
Birth certificate, as proof that you are a Ghanaian citizen.
Proof of profession. An introductory letter from your employer, a work ID card or a student ID. If you are self-employed or run a registered business, bring your business registration certificate. Homemakers, the unemployed and some workers in the informal sector do not need to provide this.
If you are renewing, bring your old passport as well.
How to apply online, step by step
Applications start online, on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs passport portal, which links through the Ghana.gov services platform. Read the “How to Apply” section on the portal first. Then:
1. Fill in the application form online and choose your service type and the Passport Application Centre where you will go for your biometrics.
2. Pay the fee. The portal accepts payment through Ecobank Ghana (Visa, Mastercard, MTN Mobile Money and Telecel Cash), GCB Bank (Telecel Cash), Zenith Bank Ghana (Visa, Mastercard, MTN Mobile Money and Telecel Cash) and Ghana.Gov Pay.
3. Go to the Passport Application Centre on your appointment date with your Ghana Card and documents for your photograph and fingerprints.
4. Wait for delivery. With the courier fee now included, the passport is delivered to you. Keep your Ghana Card at hand, because you will be asked to confirm your identity when it arrives.
Where to apply in Ghana
The portal lists Passport Application Centres in Accra, Ridge, Tema, Kumasi, Takoradi, Cape Coast, Koforidua, Ho, Sunyani, Tamale and Wa. Choose the one nearest to you when you fill in the form.
Applying from abroad
Ghanaians living outside the country apply through the same online portal and do their biometric capture at the nearest Ghana Embassy or High Commission. Check your mission’s website for appointment times and any local requirements, and remember that the Ghana Card requirement applies abroad as well.
Do not pay the middlemen
You may meet “connection men” who tell you the system is slow and that, for a fee, they can push your file. With the ordinary passport now GH¢350 including delivery, and a legitimate 24-hour service for real emergencies, there is no reason to pay anyone outside the official process. Apply online yourself, pay only through the channels on the portal, and keep your receipt.

Is my old Ghana passport still valid?
Yes. The older biometric passport remains valid until the expiry date printed in it. You get the new chip passport when you renew.
